GREASE-II -- Geographic Reasoning for Search Engines researches information access methods to large collections of documents and objects having geographically rich text and meta-data, with emphasis on the web. The project is a follow-up to a former project, which focused on algorithms for assigning geographic scopes to web contents and new methods for geographic information retrieval based on the assigned scopes.

The geographic content of a document is now characterized by geographic signatures, a set of automatically extracted geographic tags. Some of the tags will map directly into ontologic geographic concepts, while others may not even be geo-referenceable. The geographic signatures are evaluated in multiple scenarios, such as improving geographic retrieval methods and faceted interfaces for text and image retrieval applications.

Funding for this project ended on October 31, 2010.

Activities

  • Conceptualization of geographic knowledge. GKB, the knowledge base initially created for GREASE is extended in two important directions:
    • support for multiple languages, handling text containing geographic designations in multiple languages and enabling participation of the team in further international evaluations;
    • support for physical geography information.
  • Harvesting of geographic knowledge. Entities and ontologic relationships are both harvested from structured authoritative databases and mined from text collections (for example, the Portuguese Web) using information extraction methods. The present emphasis is on extracting geographic relationships and deriving new knowledge using fuzzy reasoning methods.
  • Geographic signatures of documents. These are created (off-line) as part of the indexing process. These geographic signatures will be created by using text summarization techniques along with the knowledge about the geographic relationships among the words in documents. This knowledge will be used to identify multi-word expressions representing geographic concepts and their relationships in order to produce accurate representations of the geographic scopes that characterize each text.
  • Geographic similarity for searches. These will make intensive use of automatic relevance feedback methods. Instead of evaluating similarities between ontology terms representing queries and documents, we propose new algorithms that compute similarities between geographic summaries characterizing queries and documents. Unlike in traditional information retrieval, where orthogonality among the terms is assumed, our similarity methods will have to consider that geographic summaries are rich in geographic terms that together provide one or more unambiguous references to geographic places. Another important aspect that needs to be addressed is how to properly mix geographic and text similarities, given that they are of a different nature.
