Visualization on Mobile Devices


The portability of mobile devices and the evolution of its capabilities, combined with the proliferation of wireless communication infrastructures, have contributed to the increased research effort on design and development of methods and systems for visualization of information on these devices.

The reduced display size of handheld mobile devices imposes severe usability and visualization problems. This feature is unlikely to disappear in the near future, because the device itself has the requirement of being small. Therefore, visualization on handheld devices is a challenging and important research area.

The team of this project has been working on the development of filtering mechanisms for the visualization of geo-referenced information on mobile devices, one of the tasks of project PTDC/EIA/69765/2006, “Visualization of Geo-Referenced Information”. We have focused on developing efficient mechanisms to select the relevant information, along with the management of multiple representations with different levels of detail and the creation of an adaptive interface that integrates context information and user preferences [Carmo07] [Carmo08], [Pombinho09]. As a proof of concept we have developed MoViSys, a system prototype for mobile devices that produces visualizations of geo-referenced data organized in several categories with multiple attributes. The VisMobile is a follow-up to this previous project and we aim to advance further on adaptive visualization on mobile devices along with the exploration of navigation and interaction techniques.

Adaptation to specific usage context is a key feature to overcome usability and display limitations on mobile devices. Adaptive visualization concerns the adjustment of all the components of the visualization process of geographic information such as, the interface, the information content and the information encoding according to a specific usage context [Reichenbacher08]. The demand for the adaptive visualization to a specific mobile user context will probably be stronger in the near future, with the growing amount of geo-referenced information available. The adaptivity principle is especially important to increase the usability of visualization on mobile devices and to reduce the cognitive load inherent in mobile usage contexts. We, therefore, propose to investigate this research direction of context-based adaptation of geo-referenced visualization, based on our previous research on geo-referenced information visualization. We want to explore the adequate adaptations to the components of the visualization process in response to changes in the user’s context.

One of the components of the visualization process that should reflect adaptation to context is the set of symbols. In the project “Visualization of Geo-Referenced Information” we have performed some preliminary studies about good practices to represent points of interest over a map, when desktop or laptop computer are used. We intend to extend this research to small screen devices and study how animation, color and shape variation of symbols can convey relevance according to user’s preferences.

Concerning navigation and interaction techniques we intend to focus on: pointing and integrating off-screen objects; and identifying points of interest in loco, that is, in a real world location. In previous work we have focused on achieving intelligible representations of relevant points of interest over a selected area on a map. However, the user is not aware of relevant objects that are off the screen. Several techniques have been proposed for the visualization of off-screen objects [Burigat06][Gustafson08], but none of them encodes object’s relevance. We aim to combine off screen object visualization that encodes its relevance with focus+context visualizations to show the user a large area and help the user to navigate to a new area of interest.

The identification of points of interest in a real world location can be considered in two different ways: to associate points of interest displayed as icons on a map to real world objects or to query points of interest in user vicinity. Our goal is to take advantage of recent handheld devices equipped with camera, GPS and compass to identify the position and direction of sight. The interaction with the user will be performed superimposing information over the captured image using augmented reality techniques.

This research project will contribute to develop a framework for adaptive mobile visualization. This framework will seek to establish means of integrating several techniques into an adaptive mobile visualization system in an efficient, flexible and useful manner. To validate the proposed framework, prototypes of real applications will be developed.
